Actions have consequences and so do decisions. If I reach out to touch a hot pan, I’ll get burned because that is the consequence of the action of touching the pan while it’s hot. If I decide to walk out of my job, then being unemployed is the consequence of that decision. Daniel and Nehemiah not only confess the sin of their people, but they also confess that God is right and just in punishing them for their sin. The natural consequence of their actions and decisions and The fourth element.
4. Confess the fact that God is right and just in punishing us for those sins.
Let’s face it we don’t like admitting when we are wrong. And we really hate to admit that we deserve what we are getting. However in order for us to see real healing in our Nation we must humble ourselves and do both! Remember 2 Chronicles 7: 14 if my people, who are called by my name, will humble themselves and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land. In order to truly humble ourselves we must like Daniel and Nehemiah confess our sin but admit that we deserve what we are getting.
Sometimes I feel it’s one of the hardest things to do is to admit we deserve to be punished for our actions. Yet if we don’t we will always repeat them. God never acts unjustly toward us it would be contrary to His nature. Daniel and Nehemiah understood this as truth and embraced the fact that their nation was getting what they deserved.
7 We have acted very wickedly toward you. We have not obeyed the commands, decrees and laws you gave your servant Moses. 8 “Remember the instruction you gave your servant Moses, saying, ‘If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the nations
“Therefore the curses and sworn judgments written in the Law of Moses, the servant of God, have been poured out on us, because we have sinned against you. 12 You have fulfilled the words spoken against us and against our rulers by bringing upon us great disaster. Under the whole heaven nothing has ever been done like what has been done to Jerusalem. 13 Just as it is written in the Law of Moses, all this disaster has come upon us, yet we have not sought the favor of the Lord our God by turning from our sins and giving attention to your truth. 14 The Lord did not hesitate to bring the disaster upon us, for the Lord our God is righteous in everything he does; yet we have not obeyed him.
God was right to punish Israel because they had sinned against God and His law! there was no excuses made just a bold embracing of the truth. We need to do this also because let’s face it America has sinned against God and His laws!
When we do this we naturally go where Daniel and Nehemiah went. We can then appeal to the God of all mercy and grace and begin to remind Him of the fifth element of praying for our nation.
Confess that He has promised to restore the repentant, because He is the redeemer!
Dan 9:15-19 “Now, O Lord our God, who brought your people out of Egypt with a mighty hand and who made for yourself a name that endures to this day, we have sinned, we have done wrong. 16 O Lord, in keeping with all your righteous acts, turn away your anger and your wrath from Jerusalem, your city, your holy hill. Our sins and the iniquities of our fathers have made Jerusalem and your people an object of scorn to all those around us. 17 “Now, our God, hear the prayers and petitions of your servant. For your sake, O Lord, look with favor on your desolate sanctuary. 18 Give ear, O God, and hear; open your eyes and see the desolation of the city that bears your Name. We do not make requests of you because we are righteous, but because of your great mercy. 19 O Lord, listen! O Lord, forgive! O Lord, hear and act! For your sake, O my God, do not delay, because your city and your people bear your Name.”
9 but if you return to me and obey my commands, then even if your exiled people are at the farthest horizon, I will gather them from there and bring them to the place I have chosen as a dwelling for my
